Verizon confirmed that 6 million records were compromised by Nice Systems, a Verizon partner that facilitates customer service calls. The records of subscribers who called the phone giant's customer services in the past six months were found on an unprotected Amazon S3 storage server controlled by an employee of Nice Systems, a Ra'anana, Israel-based company. The poorly secured data store was found by researchers at UpGuard. On June 8, they found the data in an open Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) bucket with a subdomain "verizon-sftp," and figured it was worth a look. They immediately got in contact with those concerned. The information included names, addresses and phone numbers of customers. Although Verizon wasn't hacked, customers who used the company's customer support service in the past six months should take action to protect their accounts, as personal data may have been accessed by hackers. "As a media outlet recently reported, an employee of one of our vendors put information into a cloud storage area and incorrectly set the storage to allow external access," a Verizon spokesperson told CNBC on Wednesday. "We have been able to confirm that the only access to the cloud storage area by a person other than Verizon or its vendor was a researcher who brought this issue to our attention.
